Valentine's Day is a day for love, romance, and appreciation for the one you have chosen to be in a relationship with. However, where did Valentine's day come from? Well according to History Channel there are at least three Saint Valentines recognized by the Catholic Church, each of which was martyred. There are a couple of legends about who Valentine was and why he is associated with this popular holiday.

One legend states that during the reign of Emperor Claudius II, marriage was outlawed for young men, following the idea that single men were better soldiers than their married counterparts. Valentine thought this was ridiculous and continued performing secret marriages for soldiers and their brides. When Claudius found out he sentenced Valentine to death which leads us into our second legend. The second legend states that Valentine might have been helping Christians escape harsh Roman prisons and while he himself was imprisoned, he fell in love with the jailer's daughter, leaving her a love letter on February 14th. He signed the letter with "your valentine".

These legends definitely paint the picture of love and romance in a world where it was definitely needed. So whether or not these legends are true, I think it is important to remember to show love to your significant other as well as to people in general. Not just on Valentine's Day, but everyday.

Hope your Valentine's Day is a good one!
